Moving Forward. Giving Back.

Jennifer Richins, AP Accounting Specialist, story on her volunteer journey.

I grew up the daughter of a 5th grade teacher, so I spent a lot of time helping my mother in her classroom. There were always books to be moved or labeled or covered, bulletin boards to be taken down or put up, and loads of school stuff that could be helped with. I learned that teachers can always use help.

As a result, when my children started school (at East Elementary in Mountain Home), I have tried to volunteer as much as possible in the classroom to assists their teachers. I have been volunteering at East for 4 years now. This year was my first year volunteering in 2 classrooms as I finally had 2 children in school. East Elementary is where I volunteer the most. I also volunteer with the youth group at our church and teach on Sundays. This year, the children I teach are 6 and 7 years old.

It's fun to volunteer because it gives you a varied perspective of your child's day that you might not otherwise get. You understand when your child says they have trouble with something or someone because you see it firsthand. You forge a good relationship with the teacher as you work with them in their classroom. Also, it's the best to be called "Grant's mom" or "Zane's mom"!! My children and I have benefited from the time I have spent volunteering in the classroom, and the teachers appreciate the help as well. Volunteering each month is something that I look forward to. I love that I'm setting an example for my children to always do what you can to help others.
