How to Help Others During This Holiday Season

With 2020 being the year it is, the holidays are going to look different for everyone. The dinner table will be a little more empty than normal, people will feel a bit more stressed, and holiday wishes will be sent virtually instead of in-person.

It might feel hard to do, but this holiday season, instead of focusing on the negatives, the politics, and the hard times, look at the positives. Find what’s going well for you and be thankful.

Another great way to enjoy the holidays is to spread the love, to help others and do something good for others. Here are some great ways to give back this holiday season.

Donate to Soup Kitchens and Homeless Shelters

Before you donate your leftover cans of soup or near expired goods, contact your local organization to see what they actually need. Many have a website or newsletter that will tell exactly what they are low on. This could include anything from food, hygiene items, spare clothing, blankets, or protection items like masks and sanitizers.

Reach out to Friends and Family Who Might Be Struggling

Between the stress caused by COVID-19, the loneliness of isolation and quarantine, and the troubles 2020 has presented to everyone, a lot of people are having a hard time. Parents, children, friends, and coworkers all might need help that you can provide.

The best thing you can do is simply reach out and spend time with them. Call them on the phone, send a text, or have a video call. Make connections with them and enjoy their company. Human connection is a necessity of life and we should all do our part helping those struggling.

Think through people you know and just start reaching out. Even people you think might be doing great may really need your attention and support. Nobody is unaffected during this time and knowing someone cares about them can go a long way.

Do Random Acts of Kindness

Pay for the coffee of the person behind you in the drive-thru. Drop off baked goods to a neighbor. Leave a thank you note and a warm cup of hot chocolate for your Amazon delivery worker.

At any moment, you could have the chance to perform a random act of kindness. Keep your eyes open to those around you and find ways to help them. Don’t hesitate and let the moment pass, go for it and try to help. Put yourself out there and do good things for others. Even a small act could have a big effect on somebody.
